“Understanding Disability” book series co-authored by Change for Balance team members

Change for Balance proudly partnered with Easterseals and Cheery Lake Publishing to create the UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY book series. This 8-book series is targeted to young readers in grades 3-5, authored by people with disabilities and allies.

Authors of the series include Erin Hawley, Jaxon Sydello, Beth Finke, and Change for Balance’s very own Tiernan Bertrand-Essington and Nicole Lynn Evans. Change for Balance and Easterseals prioritized the hiring of writers with disabilities (the youngest of whom, Sydello, is 11 years old), continuing to move the needle for inclusion and representation throughout all Easterseals content that surrounds disability.

This series explores disability in a comprehensive, honest, and age-appropriate way, with titles including “Disabilities and Relationships,” “Disability Etiquette,” “Disability Pride,” “Disability and the Media,” and more. Engaging inquiry-based sidebars throughout each title encourage readers to LOOK, THINK, MAKE A GUESS, ASK QUESTIONS, and CREATE.

UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY opens the door for critical conversations about disability to young readers and Change for Balance couldn’t be more excited to share this with the world. To learn more about the book series, and purchase your own copies, CLICK HERE!
